<p><b>Matthäus Greuter</b> (* Oktober <a href="1566" title="1566">1566</a> in <a href="Stra%C3%9Fburg" title="Straßburg">Straßburg</a>; † <a href="22._August" title="22. August">22. August</a> <a href="1638" title="1638">1638</a> in <a href="Rom" title="Rom">Rom</a>), in Italien als <b>Matteo Greuter</b> bekannt, war ein deutscher <a href="Radierung" title="Radierung">Radierer</a>, <a href="Kupferstecher" title="Kupferstecher">Kupferstecher</a> und <a href="Kartograf" title="Kartograf">Kartograf</a>, der hauptsächlich in Rom tätig war. Bekannt ist er vor allem für seine kartografischen Drucke und seine <a href="Globus" title="Globus">Globen</a>.

</p><p>Greuter wurde in Straßburg als Sohn des Goldschmiedes Conrad Greuter geboren und wurde dort am 31. Oktober 1566 getauft. Er arbeitete zunächst in seiner Heimatstadt Straßburg. Um 1594 konvertierte der Protestant Greuter

zum Katholizismus und verließ seine Heimatstadt, um in Frankreich tätig zu

werden – zunächst in <a href="Lyon" title="Lyon">Lyon</a>, später in <a href="Montpellier" title="Montpellier">Montpellier</a> und <a href="Avignon" title="Avignon">Avignon</a>. Offenbar um dem „starken intellektuellen und kommerziellen Druck des niederländischen kartografischen Verlagswesens“ zu entgehen,<sup id="cite_ref-xx_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-xx-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> zog er im Jahr 1603 nach Rom. Dort arbeitete er für prominente Auftraggeber wie Kardinal <a href="Scipione_Borghese" title="Scipione Borghese">Scipione Borghese</a>, <a href="Papst_Paul_V." class="mw-redirect" title="Papst Paul V.">Papst Paul V.</a>, die Accademia dei Lincei und <a href="Papst_Urban_VIII." class="mw-redirect" title="Papst Urban VIII.">Papst Urban VIII.</a> Er fertigte die Kupferstiche von <a href="Sonnenfleck" title="Sonnenfleck">Sonnenflecken</a> für <a href="Galileo_Galilei" title="Galileo Galilei">Galileos</a> <i>Briefe über die Sonnenflecken</i> von 1612 (<i>Istoria e Dimostrazioni intorno alle Macchie Solari</i>) und die Illustrationen für <a href="Christoph_Scheiner" title="Christoph Scheiner">Christoph Scheiners</a> Werk <i><a href="Christoph_Scheiner#Rom_(1624–1633)_und_der_Konflikt_mit_Galilei" title="Christoph Scheiner">Rosa Ursina</a></i> an.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Greuter ist vor allem für seine Pläne und Karten bekannt. Er fertigte er eine große Anzahl von Karten an, insbesondere solche, die für die Herstellung von <a href="Globus" title="Globus">Globen</a> gedacht waren. Sein erster Weltglobus erschien 1632 und war Jacobo Boncompagno gewidmet. Er basierte auf einem früheren Globus von <a href="Willem_Blaeu" title="Willem Blaeu">Willem Blaeu</a>. Die Darstellung von <a href="Hokkaid%C5%8D" title="Hokkaidō">Hokkaidō</a> deutet darauf hin, dass er das Design aktualisierte, um neuen Entdeckungen Rechnung zu tragen, da die Insel Blaeu noch nicht bekannt war, aber von einem anderen Kartenzeichner in Rom dokumentiert wurde.<sup id="cite_ref-xx_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-xx-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Im Jahr 1635 fertigte er einen „Himmelsglobus“ an, der die <a href="Sternbild" title="Sternbild">Sternbilder</a> darstellte und ebenfalls auf Blaeu basierte, welcher die Daten von <a href="Tycho_Brahe" title="Tycho Brahe">Tycho Brahe</a> verwendet hatte. Greuter scheint den Globus später aktualisiert zu haben. Zwischen 1636 und 1638 entwarf er auch Globen in reduzierter Größe.<sup id="cite_ref-xx_1-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-xx-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

</p><p>Zu seinen weiteren Werken zählen Buchfrontispize, Porträts und allegorische Entwürfe. Sein satirischer Stich des „Doktor Wurmbrandt“, der menschliche Torheiten „bereinigt“, wurde später von <a href="Martin_Droeshout" title="Martin Droeshout">Martin Droeshout</a> adaptiert.<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
